Microblading FAQ

(from the Society for Permanent Cosmetics Professionals at http://www.spcp.org/3213-2/

HOW LONG DOES MICROBLADING LAST?
Microblading is a semi-permanent procedure and requires touch-ups to keep from fading out. Color duration primarily depends on how oily the skin is. The oilier the skin, the shorter the color lasts. Sweating and sun exposure also reduce color fastness. On average, expected time until a new color refreshment is between 12 and 18 months. With oily skin it is up to 6 months.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?
In order to ensure that the brows heal perfectly, two treatments are usually needed, at least 6-8 weeks apart. A perfection session is included as it gives us the ability to correct any areas that possibly faded, or allows the client to make suggestions if they want something adjusted.

DOES IT HURT?
We do all that we can to ensure that the process is as comfortable as possible. Topical anesthetics are applied during the procedure to minimize discomfort. Some people are more sensitive than others, and it varies depending on your individual pain tolerance.Clients who are scared and those who have their period usually feel stronger pain, while the others compare the pain to the one they feel when plucking eyebrows.

CAN MICROBLADING COVER UP AN OLD PERMANENT BROW TATTOO?
If you have had your eyebrows previously tattooed and are interested in a cover-up/re-work, you MUST send us a clear photo PRIOR to booking your appointment. We cannot guarantee results for cases such as these and we must approve that your eyebrows are workable. In many cases, we cannot accept the work unless the old tattoo is VERY light and has faded out. If you were previously microbladed, it is also hard to follow the old work unless it was done correctly.

CONTRAINDICATIONS TO MICROBLADING:

  • Pregnant or Nursing
  • Seborrheic Dermatitis
  • Diabetes
  • Accutane users must wait a minimum of 1 year before receiving microblading
  • If you have extremely oily skin, unfortunately microblading will NOT work well for you. The constant production of oil will cause the hairstrokes to heal with a diffused, softer look. Your end result will look more powdered.
  • If you are iron deficient or Anemic, your pigment may fade sooner and bleeding/bruising may occur during and after the procedure.
  • If you are prone to keloid/hypertrophy scarring
  • If you are allergic to topical antibiotic preparation (Polysporin, Bacitracin, Neosporin, or Caine family of drugs or Petroleum based products such as Vaseline

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO RECEIVE MICROBLADING?
We require our clients to be at least 18 years of age.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH FACTORS FOR  MICROBLADING?
We use ALL sterile and disposable equipment to ensure that each appointment is clean and safe for not only us, but the safety of each client. ALL blades, hand tools, wipes, bed sheets and any other product used during the procedure is disposed of after each appointment, giving each client peace of mind.

HOW WILL I LOOK IMMEDIATELY AFTER? WHAT IS THE HEALING PROCESS?
Color is extremely dark during the first 5 to 7 days. 7 days later, it loses 40% to 50% of its intensity. If you think the color is too dark, do not try to remove it yourself by no means. Patiently wait 7 days for the color to fade on its own after the healing of the skin. The healing is fully completed after 28 days and this is when we perform an obligatory addition of the pigment that has been lost.
Post-treatment flow makes 70% of the treatment’s success. Conscientiously obey advice or you may lose up to 80% of drawn strokes. Washing, rinsing and applying creams is of great importance.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT LONG TERM CARE?
Fading speed depends on your skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, pigment color used, and if any exfoliating treatments/chemical peels were done after your procedure. If you are planning a chemical peel, laser treatment or other medical procedure, please inform the technician that you have had a cosmetic tattoo. Careful application must be taken to avoid affecting the tattooed area.

The success of the treatment depends on the:
– skin quality
– post-treatment flow and care
– exposure to different external factors

All of these factors are out of the artist’s control, so any possibility to provide guarantees for the treatment is excluded.

MICROBLADING BEFORE & AFTERCARE

It is highly beneficial to follow these instructions to ensure a comfortable healing process and to achieve the best results.

BEFORE CARE / HOW TO PREPARE BEFORE TREATMENT

  • You may fill in your eyebrows as you normally would so we can take into consideration the shape you desire.
  • VACATION: If you plan to go on a vacation, it is recommended to plan your trip a minimum of 14 days after the procedure.
  • MEDICATIONS: We REQUIRE our clients to avoid any blood thinning medication for a minimum of 72 hours prior to their appointment. This includes Vitamin E, Aspirin, Niacin, fish oil supplements, and Ibuprofen.
  • ALCOHOL: We REQUIRE no alcohol consumption up to 24 hours before your appointment time.
  • CAFFEINE: Avoid caffeine for up to 24 hours prior to your appointment. This will help you to relax much more easily, as well as help to relax the facial muscles in the areas we will be working on.  If possible, avoid having your procedure done while on your menstrual cycle as you will be more sensitive.
  • ACCUTANE: If you have been on prescription Accutane in the past, you MUST wait at least one year before considering this procedure.
  • SUN EXPOSURE: It is highly recommended that you avoid SUN and the TANNING BED exposure for 30 days BEFORE and AFTER your procedure. If you show up for your appointment with a new tan or a sunburn, you will need to reschedule and will forfeit your deposit. As your skin exfoliates from a sunburn, it will take the pigment with it.

POST PROCEDURAL CARE

  • Immediately following your procedure, the brows will be 20-25% darker and bolder in color and more sharply defined. Your skin is red under the pigment which causes the color of the pigment to appear darker. This WILL subside. Exfoliation, which begins in a few days, will cause the excess pigment surrounding the eyebrow to flake away and a narrower shape will appear. This can last up to a week after the treatment while the initial healing process takes place.

  • The treated area may feel slightly tender and appear swollen or red for one to two days, but there should be minimal discomfort.

  • It is normal to lose approximately 1/3 of the color during the healing process. Appearance will be softer when completely healed because color will come from the dermal layer to the epidermal layer of the skin. Be patient, even if you think too much color has been lost, as your skin is still regenerating and naturally exfoliating. After 6-8 weeks, a perfection session will be performed to refresh the color and replace lost hairstrokes.

  • During the initial healing period, there should be minimal scabbing or flaking of the skin. If there is some scabbing or flaking, do NOT pick, and allow the scab or dry skin to come off on its own. Picking can cause scarring and premature loss of pigment. Once the flakes have fallen off, a shiny layer of healing skin will completely cover the hair strokes. It may appear as though the tattooed area has completely disappeared. Within 1-2 weeks, the hair strokes will slowly reappear at a lighter shade as your skin regenerates.

  • DO NOT apply make-up to the tattooed area for the first 2 weeks. Cosmetics of any kind may interfere with the healing and color of your tattoo.
  • DO NOT use Vaseline, Neosporin or other petroleum based products while healing.
  • DO NOT bleach, tint or dye the tattooed area for one month following the procedure.
  • DO NOT apply any acne products (e.g. Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Proactiv, etc.) or lightening creams (skin bleaching creams) such as hydroquinone to the treated area while healing.
  • No anti-aging products or facial products containing Alpha Hydroxyls (AHAs), Retin-A, Lactic or Glycolic Acids.
  • NO exercising and/or sweating for 3-5 days after. No Hot Yoga!
  • NO swimming pools, jacuzzis or other bodies of water for two weeks.
  • Do not soak your face underwater in a bathtub or allow the shower to spray directly in your face for two weeks.
  • Avoid any facials, face or body massage, eyelash extensions, threading or waxing for two weeks.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS
MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF PIGMENTS!

FULLY HEALED / LONG TERM CARE

  • Exposure to the sun over time can cause fading and discoloration of the pigment. Once completely healed, you may apply sunscreen on the treated area. Wear large sunglasses and a hat for further protection. Rinse and dry the area thoroughly when in contact with chlorine.
  • Glycolic acid, microdermabrasion, and chemical face peel products must be kept away from the tattooed area as continued use could lighten the pigment.
  • If you are having laser resurfacing or laser hair removal after your tattoo has healed, please inform the laser technician. Continue at your own discretion. Laser procedures may darken, lighten, or discolor the tattooed area.
  • Once the treated area is completely healed, any changes or additions that need to be made can be done at your follow-up appointment no sooner than 6-8 weeks later.
